| Breaking News | | Monday, September 26th, 2011: King of the Hill Announced by Eastern League This season Julián Reyes of Connecticut was the #1 pitcher according to SION sportswriters and analysts. His fine 18-3 won-lost mark and 3.15 had a big influence in the voting and the Connecticut hurler was named the 2011 Eastern League EL Pitcher of the Year winner.
In 180 innings of work and 26 starts, the Defenders star struck out 182 while giving up 156 hits and 64 walks. He held opposing batters to a .233 average.
This weekend Reyes will be honored by the SION Baseball Writers Association at its annual awards dinner. | | Tuesday, September 13th, 2011: Defenders KO's Phillies It was a clash of the two best teams in the Eastern League -- the Connecticut Defenders and the Reading Phillies -- and when the dust cleared on the diamond -- the Defenders were the 2011 EL Championship champions.
It all came to an end today at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium, when Connecticut clinched the title with a 7-6 victory and won the series 3-2. It is the 2nd time it has happened in club history.
During the Northern Division regular season Connecticut put up a 89-53 record and finished first. | | Saturday, August 27th, 2011: Cantú Torches Fisher Cats for 5 Hits It was a good day for the Defenders at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium as they clipped the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 8-7. It was tremendous day for Anastasio Cantú, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage.
The Connecticut second baseman told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
A. Cantú hit a two-run single in the 1st, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
So far this year Cantú has 3 home runs and a .290 batting average. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 89-53, .627 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 47-24, .662 PCT | | Record on the road | 42-29, .592 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-2, .750 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 22-17, .564 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 24-15, .615 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 65-38, .631 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 16-7, .696 PCT | | Record in May | 19-10, .655 PCT | | Record in June | 18-10, .643 PCT | | Record in July | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in August | 16-13, .552 PCT | | Record in September | 5-0, 1.000 PCT |
